Loss of Gentleman

Tony Atherton passes away

I am once again saddened to have to pass on some very sad news. Tony Atherton passed away on Wednesday evening peacefully in his sleep. Tony was a fine player for Birkenhead Park and then went on to become a distinguished coach with Cheshire, initially at under 21 level where he was an inspirational mentor to the likes of myself and Austin Healey. Tony whilst coaching at Instonians turned them into the best junior club in the area at that time; he then went on to be Director of Rugby at New Brighton and then had a fine spell at Caldy. He transformed the club from a local junior team into the National League force it is today. He had a shrewd eye for spotting young players and I know from the time I coached with him at Caldy, that his passion was in seeing young, local players come through and make the grade. Ironically having moved away from the Wirral, he was looking to come back to the area in the New Year.
A true gentleman and a winner through and through, he will be missed by everyone who came across his path.

RIP
