Anselmians vs Wirral

Anselmians U10 vs. Wirral U10

Finally the big one for the season – a match against our neighbours and great rivals Wirral and what a disappointment!

The match was played under clear blue skies, well refereed, no cross words, players from both sides laughing and chatting, coaches cheering for the opposition, parents mingling and a fantastic exhibition of rugby. This was certainly not a good example of the local derby.

The game was spread over 4 quarters each of which was well contested. In the first Wirral started the stronger and were dominant in the loose. Good defence by Ewan and Owen ensured that the Anselmians line wasn’t breached and in the end on the few occasions that Saints did win good ball Wirral were undone by the blistering pace of Josh, who scored 2 tries.

The second quarter was much closer with both sides now moving the ball more freely. The quarter was marred by a potentially bad injury to Charlie C who was whisked off to hospital by his mum. Charlie did prove that he is definitely a rugby player in the making as he turned up in the bar 40 minutes after the game, arm in a sling, smile on his face and boasting about his battle scars. Back to the rugby, Charlie was replaced by Josh and again his pace was a major attacking threat. Wirral’s pace man was a match however and they scored 2 fine tries. Anselmians replied with 2 tries of the own, both scored by Jack, who showed goal - hanging skills Jimmy Greaves would have been proud of. The tries were the result of good forward pressure and perseverance.

In the third quarter Saints dominated throughout with Ewan scoring his usual handful of tries. He was well supported by Owen, who also scored, Liam, Ben and Ieuan who provided the ball for Ewan to do the scoring.

The final quarter was arguably the best with Anselmians leading three times only to be pegged back on each occasion by Wirral. Jack again popped up by the try line to crash over. The forwards of Joe, Ieuan and Ewan were excellent in the loose and the half back spun the ball with relish and no little skill. This quarter finished 3 – 3.

Anselmians won the match overall but the true winner was local junior rugby. All the boys on the day, from both sides, contributed to the morning’s entertainment and if Martin Johnson is reading this there were certainly plenty of ideas flying around the bar afterwards to assure all that English rugby is in robust health.

Anselmians squad: - Ewan, Jack, Liam, Owen, Charlie C, Charlie M, Joe, Michael, Thomas, Ieuan, Josh, Will, Louis, Connor, Sam and Ben.
