1 YORKS win the Naivalurua Cup

1 YORKS' dominant 2016 RL season continues as they win the Naivalurua (Inter-Unit) 9s Cup, adding to their Yeoman Cup success.

A really cracking day of Rugby League was held here in MoD Lyneham last Wed 20 Jul 16; where fifteen unit teams took part in the Army Rugby League Naivalurua (Inter-Unit) 9s Cup, 4 Tier Competition, of Cup, Plate Shield and Bowl.

Fifteen unit teams competed in the 2016 Army Rugby League Naivalurua (Inter-Unit) 9s Cup hosted in MoD Lyneham on Wed 20 Jul 16. The new home of the REME and the single technical training school of DSEME in Lyneham, is also home to the newly formed 8 Trg Bn REME. The Naivalurua 9s Cup continues to be a 4-Tier Competition of Cup, Plate, Shield and Bowl Finals; after a series of pool games, with Nil cost to enter for Unit teams. 8 Trg Bn REME Rugby entered two teams in the “Nav 9s”, after only six training sessions, where the majority of players were young “Rugby Union” players who had never previously played Rugby League, but thoroughly enjoyed the games and the opportunity to play. No doubt there was a similar demographic in most teams. Each team played at least four games.

1 YORKS who are also the current Army Rugby League Yeoman (Inter-Unit) Cup 13s champions beat 8 Trg Bn REME A Team in a close fought Cup Final, after beating the 2015 Cup holders; 7 Para RHA in a bone crunching Semi-Final, winning by a single score. 2 YORKS beat the LD in the Plate Final. The RDG beat 8 Trg Bn REME B Team in the Shield Final and 21 Engr Regt beat 3 RSME in the Bowl Final. The other teams who competed in a great day of Army sport were; 4 Regt RA, 47 Regt RA, 1 RRF, 1 MERCIAN, 1 RIFLES and 9 Regt RLC. There were a number of hard core teams who have regularly competed in the 9s over the last couple of years who could not make the competition date on this occasion, with another five teams who had expressed intent to compete but who were also unable to attend due to other commitments.
