Dad's & Lad's Tradition Continues
Ashbourne Remain Top Of The League
Dronfield Development XV 14 – Ashbourne 4ths 17
Ashbourne’s unbeaten run continued last weekend with a hard-fought League match at Dronfield.
It also continued the “Dad & Lad” tradition with Chris “mad dog” Massey & his 17-year-old son Luke playing together for the first time. Luke had a great game, playing a very mature game making some good runs & big tackles, however his Old Man pipped his performance with a cracking try!
It was a very windy afternoon & the pitch is on a huge slope which saw Ashbourne playing down hill in the first half & taking an early lead with a try form Linny, converted by Glithero.
Ashbourne continued to have the upper hand in the first half even after loosing Fly Half Johnny Birkett through injury and had to continue with 14 men as no replacements were available.
The second half was a different game, Ashbourne now playing up the slope, and the wind had also picked up blowing any kicks made straight back into their own half.
Dronfield managed to score 2 tries, both converted, to move up to 14 pts.
Ashbourne had to dig deep and change their tactics and “shove the ball up their jumpers” making ground by fantastic driving mauls up the hill lead by Stuart Lemon. Forwards Wright, Gardner and the Massey duo all had good games in the tight.
Youngster Alfie Smith was also making his senior team debut and looked very comfortable in the line out and putting in some strong tackles against some larger, older men.
Ashbourne were awarded a line out inside Dronfield’s “22”. Scrum Half Simon Wint made a great call & read what Dronfield’s tactics were, resulting in a try.
The whole team dug deep for the final 10 minutes, which resulted in some great defence & resulted in another try sealing the win for the away side.
Ashbourne still sit at the top of the league and hope to continue their 1005 record in another League game next Saturday at home against Ashfield 3rds.
