History - History 1
How or why the amalgamation occurred is unclear but reference to Northumberland County Records shows that prior to 1922 Ashington won the No 2 Cup competition in 1908, while Ashington and Hirst United won the No 3 cup the same year.
Ashington like many other clubs existed over the years without their own clubhouse as a base, and several drinking establishments in the town were 'home' to players and officials after matches. The Portland Arms Hotel was a favourite until a change in the Public
House opening times meant that drinks could not be served until 6pm. the players soon moved their H.Q. to the Middle Market Working Mens Social Club just down the street which served drinks at 5.30pm. this was a popular move for both clubs and resulted in Ashington Rugby Club players being made Honorary Members of the Middle Market SC.
