Ashington 12 Whitley Bay Rockcliff 67
Ash got their season of to a promising start when after three minutes centre James Jones raced 70 metres to score a try under the posts converted by James Turner. Thereafter it was all downhill as an impressive Rockcliff scored four first half tries to give the visitors a 7-29 lead.
Ashington started the second half strongly and a big hit by Mitchell Brown, who was one of the few Ashington players to come out of this game with any credit and never stopped trying, set up a good position. A Jonathon Storey break and perfectly timed pass saw James Jones race over for his second try.
WBR dominated the rest of the game scoring seven second half tries as Ashington struggled to get possession and missed tackles.
After an excellent preseason where numbers at training have been very good, this was a very disappointing start to the league campaign and the players need to quickly bounce back next week at Sedgefield.
Ashington 2’s who have been promoted 2 seasons running, were unlucky not to win their game drawing 22 -22 with Ponteland, who scored the equalizing try with the final play of the game
