Wimbledon undone by Ashtead spinners
The double completed over Wimbledon with hard fought win
Ashtead completed the double of wins in the season over Wimbledon for what's believed to be the first time ever in the 3rd XI league. In this top of the table clash, Wimbledon won the toss and inserted Ashtead on a damp wicket. And with tight bowling runs were hard to come by early on.
Bukhari was the first to go, losing patience and getting caught to the left arm opening bowler. Wint the next to go undone with a swinging yorker to the same bowler. Both openers now out, and then the captain and Nichols also out we found ourselves 40-4 off nearly 20 overs.
A key partnership formed between Akrabali (64) and Hunt (39) to settle the innings and start a fight back. Ashtead were eventually out in the final over for 177 with two wickets falling in consecutive balls. But from a slow and tentative start we scored 177, a competitive score in the end.
Wimbledon replied in positive manner and both openers punishing anything not on the right line and length. At drinks Wimbledon had scored over a 100-0 and looked well set, but when the score reached 111, wickets started to fall with the off spin of Hunt (4-16) and Culhane (5-30) proving too much for Wimbledon, and it was left to the leg spin of Caprano-Wint (1-0) to take the final wicket in the 47th over with his third ball to see Wimbledon lose by 26 runs, with all 10 wickets falling for just 40 runs.
A great team performance secures 2nd position with 3 games to go and we take on Reigate Priory next week.
