Spirited Stags Fight Back

Toolstation Division 1

7th April 2018 at ABUFC’s Lancer Scott Stadium.

FINAL SCORE: A+BUFC 2 [Manning 35m & 51m] DEVIZES TOWN FC 2 [Jamie Walters 12m, Slater 20m]; HALF TIME 1-2

We approach this game very much at the business end of the season; at kick-off the Stags sit fourth from bottom, nine games to go, seven of them away and knowing that, in all reality, any two from the bottom five are facing the drop back to county league soccer. And it started very briskly, very much on the back of the great performance at Chard Town on Thursday night, Shearer in particular looking sharp in a formation favouring pace down the flanks.

However in the twelfth minute Town won their first corner, it was beautifully flighted into the box from the right and met by the unchallenged Jamie Walters whose powerful header into the top right hand corner gave the Red and Whites the lead. 1-0. Things did not improve when in the twentieth minute the visitors won a free kick to the right of the box, resulting from a Read foul. Brigham’s powerful kick ricocheted off the wall, fell to Daniel twenty yards out, his shot was only parried by Coombes and Slater snapped up the loose ball to loop it into the net.2-0.

Things could have got even worse when four minutes later Town won a free kick in the same place, this time Enderby’s place kick was grasped safely by Coombes. Some in the crowd were recalling the 9-2 drubbing at the hands of Town last season at this stage, so it was very much pressure on the players to show the character for the fight, not only to claw their way back into this game but also to edge away from the relegation trap door.

There was certainly much endeavour, though a little disjointed, but it all came together ten minutes from the interval when Uppington advanced down the right before unleashing a point perfect pass to meet the advancing Manning’s head in the box. 1-2. The goal injected more urgency into the Stags and Shearer’s great turn and shot on 44 minutes forced a good save from Walters in the away goal.

Half time 1-2

Sadly Shearer was withdrawn at the interval, feeling groggy from a bang to the head, Conor Biggins replacing. His introduction, though, added more pace and menace to the Stags front line, troubling the Town defence all half.

Six minutes after the restart it was all square; a brilliant Bishop cross from adjacent to the dug-outs on the left found Manning in space to net his second with an unchallenged header. 2-2. And Bishop was instrumental too in maintaining parity in his own box when his pressure forced Daniel to head wide from an Enderby cross on 57 minutes.

The energy and work rate for the Stags was immense and they even coped with loss of Hughes to a leg injury that forced a change to the back four with thirty minutes left, the welcome return of Saunders, but in the unusual role of right back. The Stags continued to attack and try to get the winner. The first chances came on 68 minutes, Conor Biggins crossed into the Town box from the left, Uppington’s shot was blocked by Walters, then Manning tried for his hattrick, Walters’ block going to a corner, that gave Biggins the chance to supply Read, his powerful header skimming over the bar. Then with seven minutes remaining Hardidge pushed the ball through to Manning, his thirty yarder just saved by Walters.

It was not all one way traffic though, and the Red and Whites could have taken the three points. Ten minutes from time a Town free kick was met by Jamie Walters whose powerful shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Coombes who a minute later had to stop the same player in a one-on-one when he beat the Stags offside trap.

A frantic last seven added minutes saw end to end football, but the final whistle meant a valuable point for the Stags, the only club in the bottom six to take any on the afternoon, meaning on Saturday night they sit fifth from bottom. Progress, but a hard journey still not complete.
