Under 11's - Ashton v West Bank
The Bear Necessities
After a comfortable win last week the bears were about to face a much tougher test against West Bank of Widnes. Due to the opponents being light in numbers the game was played with 10 players each.
As the game got under way the Bears were put straight on the back foot; pretty much from the off the West Bank winger raced clear and scored the first try from nearly the full length of the pitch. West Bank converted the try making the score 0-6.
The early warning signs were there for all to see from our opponents and it didn’t get much better as the same lad raced clear from the half way line to score once more, the kick converted making the score 0-12 to West Bank.
There had to be a reaction from the Bears or this could turn into a very long morning and they reacted with a great passing move to which a slick pass released George Hopkins
, who jinked in the corner to fly over the try line; George Green
kicking the conversion making the score 6-12 at half time.
Some stern words needed from the coaches at half time to get the Bears back into this game going in to the second half.
The second half started the same way as the first West Bank made a break from the half way line and sprinted clear to score once more, kick converted making the score 6-18.
The Bears at this stage are starting to grind West Bank down with some ferocious tackling from Callum Cottington
, Harry Ireland
, Isaac Wheeler
, Josh Denton
, Tom Grundy
, Rees Watterson
and Joe Hobson
and really getting the better of West Bank which opened the field up for our flair players.
The Bears capitalised on this and a great jinking run from George Green
bamboozling the West Bank defence to score a superb try, Joe Hobson
kicking between the posts making the score 12-18.
At this stage we are now well on top with some strong running from Alex Roughsege, Daniel Hill
, Matthew Sayer
, George Green
, Josh Denton
and George Hopkins
making good yards up the field, with this pressure up pops Isaac Wheeler
smashing through several tackles to storm over the line, kick converted by Josh Denton
making the score 18-18
At this point our opponents are well and truly rattled through the sheer determination in defence to not let them in, to force the mistake from them and to release our attacking players, up steps the man George Green
to show their defence a clean pair of heels with another jinking run to fly over the line in the corner, George Hopkins
with the kick.
Making the final score 24-18 to the Bears.
A great game to watch which the Bears made a slow start but once in our rhythm we were clearly too much for West Bank, our defence was awesome second half and with this it allowed our attacking players to go to work on their defence and get the game won.
Well done players & coaches
