LAX MINI LEAGUE
Ashton Lacrosse Clubs mini league has reached the half way stage of the tournament and has proved to be a fantastic success for all involved. Teams from Ashton, Heaton Mersey, Stockport Mersey Guild, Cheadle Hulme and two teams from Poynton have entered the competition which takes place on Thursdays at the Tameside Sports Stadium. The 8 a side tournament, playing two 8-minute halves is different to what the players are use too and has produced high-octane games that are played at a frantic speed. Ashton currently lies mid-table having won 3 and lost 3 and have played some excellent lacrosse along the way. Ashton’s coach said “ We are doing superbly well considering this is a new team that has been put together with several of last seasons under 12 players stepping up to the plate and the current under 14 players are setting a great example. At times the lacrosse we play is unstoppable, Jack Newall finished off an exquisite move, assisted by Sam Dean, which was fit to grace any premier league match. The midfield players are working extremely hard and Oliver Newall has been outstanding at face off, fighting for every ground ball. It has been a learning curve for all the players but I think the greatest improvement has been made at the back. Defensively we have been very strong with Oliver Goodlad being impressive when clearing the ball and breaking up field. Hopefully next week results will go our way and we can be in contention for making the championship playoff final.” James Newall, the tournament director said “ Everyone I have spoken to has said how much they have enjoyed it, the idea was to give the players some competitive games during the off season and this format has proved to be a great hit all round. Next season we could even look at holding both a junior and senior competitions to build on our success”. The remaining games of the mini league take place on the 26th May with the Championship Finals on the 2nd of June, 6.30 pm.
