The game, at home, against Rochdale B was tinged with sadness due to the loss of our friend and Club stalwart, Peter Schofield. With this in mind, both teams paused for a minutes silence and reflection prior to the start of the game.
Ashton ‘A’ started Q1 with no team shirts due to Colin ‘I’m on my way’ Shockledge forgetting to collect them from his cellar prior to setting off to the game. He blames a two-day ‘bender’ but there is a conspiracy theory developing around his attempt to avoid the washing duty!
Q1 saw a turbo charged explosion of Ashton goals, six in total, with only one in reply. Dave Schofield
marked his return to Ashton with a classy brace, the other four being shared around, Ian ‘you'll find me on crease’ Pattinson, Paul ‘Wurzel’ Worsley, Ross Allen
and the Poster Boy.
Towards the end of the quarter Colin turned up with the shirts and once again Ashton’s colours were on the back of our players.
The extra weight of the shirts seem to slow the ‘A’ down and only Ross managed a goal in Q2, with Rochdale pulling two back. This caused Captain Banny to give serious consideration towards ditching the shirts again for Q3, maybe with the excuse that Colin had lost them. However, referee Newall heard of the plans and put an early stop to the skulduggery.
Q3 was a tighter battle, Ashton ‘A’ coming out on top 4-3. Dave Schofield
added another two to his total, while Wurzel took a very nice individual opportunity to give him his second of the game. Marcus ‘ I thought I was a defender’ Goodlad completes the picture with his first ever ‘A’ goal, the quarter ending 11-6 in Ashton’s favour.
In the final quarter the ‘A’ stepped up the tempo to ensure Rochdale couldn’t get a foot hold in the game. One of the five Ashton scored in Q4 came from Dave Schofield
, meaning that he had scored all but quarter 2 and ended the game as top scorer. Ashton win 16-8, and move up to 2nd in the league.
The end of game cheers rang out across the field, but the additional one for Peter Schofield was the loudest of all.
