Jay Gorton tells James Burch about his recent injury.

There will be many more twists and turns to come!
- Jason Gorton, Club Captain.

It’s safe to say, Captain Jay Gorton didn’t have the best of days against Halesowen. Having scored an own goal in the fifth minute of the game, the centre-half was taken off the field twenty minutes later after a sickening clash of heads with defensive partner Sam Wilson.

It has now been confirmed that Gorton broke his cheekbone in this incident, however the Robins' captain fantastic is just focused on promotion and thanked all the staff and fans of both clubs for helping him overcome his shocking injury;

“I went up for a whole hearted aerial challenge against Halesowen and unfortunately Sam Wilson and I clashed heads and I was the one that came out worse for wear.”

“It has been confirmed my cheekbone was broken and it will take time for it to recover. That’s not stopped me from being 100% committed to the cause. I guarantee I will go up for my first header when I’m back fit... and win it!”

Adding; “I’d like to thank the staff and physio teams of both sides that helped me so quickly and encouraged me onto my feet. I have to be honest, I wanted to play on and I’m sure I could have gritted my teeth and done so. However, I am very thankful that they gave me their expert advice and help.”

Gorton had a torrid 25 minutes at the Grove, however as he once again re-iterated It’s a team game and as long as the team keeps winning, anything can happen this season;

"Looking back on the Halesowen game, it was a result that could be crucial come the end of the season. It wasn’t the best of games and with a strong wind and on a bobbly pitch, the game started slowly. I had no choice but to stick my leg out before the own goal and we will learn from that. It was crucial the lads turned it round and Lee and Martin’s goals were second to none, in terms of importance and quality. It is crucial we start up another run of wins that will propel us towards the top of the table, with just over ten games to go this year.”

Ashton United find themselves six points off top spot, going into their midweek clash against Kings Lynn Town. The Robins are yet to play the East Anglian side this year and it will be crucial that Phillo and Ackers men pick up three points.

Gorton claimed the season is still in the balance and with FC United due to play fellow promotion chasers in weeks to come, the Robins could still find themselves league champions come the 25th April;

“It is a team effort now. We aren’t individuals, we are a squad that all have our eyes on one thing... promotion out of this division. FC United dented our title aspirations a fortnight ago as they beat us 3-0. However, we walked off the field that day knowing we should have got at least a point. There will be many more twists and turns to come and I urge you all to stick by us and cheer us on to every crucial point that is up for grabs.”
