Robins Begin Another Cup Adventure, Written by Daniel Evans

SALFORD CITY FC VS ASHTON UNITED

MANCHESTER PREMIER CUP 1st ROUND

DATE: TUESDAY 9TH OCTOBER 2018

KO: 19:45

VENUE: The Peninsula Stadium, Salford, M7 3PZ

Ashton come into this game onto the back of four consecutive victories in all competitions against Hereford, Trafford, Leamington and Kings Lynn Town respectively. The last victory was a 1-0 away win over Kings Lynn Town with a beautiful finish from Ramirez Howarth to seal the Robins passage to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup where a tricky tie away to Southport awaits.

After bringing in new manager Graham Alexander during the summer break as well as numerous new signings during their first season in the Vanarama National League no one knew just how well they would fare however currently they have exceeded expectations and Salford are currently top of the Vanarama National League in addition to being unbeaten in 12 games with 10 of those being victories.

Ahead of the short trip to the Peninsula Stadium, manager Jody Banim had the following to say “It is important to keep everybody fit and after we had some departures during the week we look pretty light, Tuesday will be a good opportunity to give the players who haven’t had many minutes to get some game time as we don’t want to be risking injuries.”

ONE TO WATCH:

The one to watch this weekend is defender Nathan Pond, the 33 year old defender started his career at Lancaster City in a short spell in 2003, later that year he signed for Fleetwood Town where he would stay for fifteen years. During that time he would play in seven different divisions for the seaside club which gives him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for most different divisions played in for a single club. Also, during that time he made a record 460 league appearances for the club contributing 50 goals. He will no doubt be considered one of, if not the greatest player in their clubs history. During the summer of 2018, former Fleetwood manager Graham Alexander managed to persuade Nathan Pond to move to Salford City and to date he has made 11 league appearances and contributed one goal as the club fight for promotion to the Football League.

LAST TIME OUT

The Robins last faced Salford away in a play-off semi-final during the 2015/16 season. It was not a night to remember for the Robins as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. Jordan Hulme opened the scoring for the home side in the 25th minute with a looping header. Ashton fought hard to get back into the tie and managed to score an equaliser courtesy of a 68th minute headed effort from Will Haining, which was his first goal for the club. Ashton managed to ride their luck to the full time whistle and with neither team managing to find a winner during normal time, extra time loomed. It proved too much for the Robins and it took just 60 seconds for substitute Gareth Seddon to put the tie in Salford’s favour with his first touch of the ball. And on the 113 minute mark James Poole made sure of the victory with a short range effort following a deep cross from Jordan Hulme. Poole’s goal sealed Salford’s progression to the play off final, a game which Salford won with a 3-2 victory over Workington to ensure promotion to the National League North.
