Non-League Day 2014 brought out the crowds in the EVO-STIK League's Premier Division but goals were largely at a premium, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Stamford AFC`s second successive defeat saw Skelmersdale United top the table, while still managerless Witton Albion moved into third place after winning 2-0 at Barwell.

Skem won through Connor McCarthy's goal two minutes into the second half at Westfield Lane against Frickley Athletic, while Stamford lost 3-1 at the Riverside to Ramsbottom United, for whom Steve Howson scored after 10 minutes and, after Michael Built had equalised on the half-hour mark, Jordan Hulme on the hour-mark and Phil Dean in the 74th minute found the mark in front of 357 fans.

Witton's scorers in Leicestershire were Ben Harrison in the 15th minute and then the recently-returned Josh Hancock 15 minutes later. Barwell are now bottom after the reverse.

Belper Town are still yet to win as a Premier Division side, although their 2-0 defeat at Christchurch Meadow against Whitby Town – the Seasiders` first win – was only the Nailers' second defeat in seven games. Another decent crowd of 373 saw a Dan White own goal just before the break give the visitors the lead and then Richard Pell added a second on 68 minutes.

There were three goalless draws on Saturday – Grantham Town were held at The Meres by Ashton United, a crowd of 1,142 saw Marine AFC share the spoils with FC United of Manchester and 560 at Causeway Lane watched Matlock Town draw with Ilkeston FC.

King's Lynn Town moved up to fourth in the fledgling table after edging out Nantwich Town 2-1 at The Walks.

Another decent crowd of 552 saw Jackson Ramm put the Linnets ahead after 28 minutes and four minutes later George Thompson doubled their advantage. Aaron Burns reduced the deficit on the hour-mark but the Dabbers were unable to find a leveller.

Buxton are sixth after winning 1-0 at Croft Park against Blyth Spartans – Shaun Tuton popping up with the only goal of the game just three minutes from time.

A crowd of 768 saw Halesowen Town lose by the same scoreline at The Grove against relegated Workington AFC, for whom Matty Tymon was the match-winner on 65 minutes.

Rushall Olympic inflicted a first defeat of the season on promoted Curzon Ashton at the Tameside Stadium.

Jack Duggan gave the Pics a 7th minute lead that Ryan Winwood doubled after 21 minutes. Matty Kay reduced the arrears 10 minutes before the break and then his penalty with less than two minutes to go at the end of the game looked to have earned a share of the spoils. That was until Aaron Farrell grabbed Rushall`s winner in injury-time.

Trafford took a 24th minute lead at home to switched Stourbridge through Shelton Payne, whose new signing Reece Hales equalised five minutes later. Luke Benbow then put the Glassboys in front two minutes after half-time, only for Michael Oates to restore parity less than a minute later.
