Good Workout in Final Friendly
Report by David Robinson.
Ashton took on Rochdale’s first team squad in their final friendly before the new season starts on Saturday. Rochdale are now managed by the ex-Ashton duo of John Coleman and Jimmy Bell and brought several of the players who were narrowly beaten at the weekend by Barnsley in the new Capital One cup.
With the pitch looking in fine fettle in front of a decent sized crowd it was the visitors who were first into their stride with some fine passing which lead to them taking the lead on the quarter hour as Putterill was given too much room on the edge of the area and provided a fine finish over the slightly advanced Smith.
Ashton’s best chance to draw level fell to Ben Deegan who got a clear run on goal but pulled his shot narrowly wide. The Robins look to have assembled a strong squad for the season coming with Mulholland returning along with Deegan and new additions Burke and Lynch.
Dale continued to have the better of the chances with a couple of narrow escapes in the home defence, and after the interval the lively Matty Kosylo replaced Mulholland and almost fashioned the equaliser as his cross into the box was just too far ahead of Burns. The visitors were always dangerous however and winger McConville cut inside before sending a rasping 20-yarder against the woodwork.
Ashton gave a good account of themselves against opposition from 3 leagues higher which should stand them in good stead for the opening league fixture against Worksop Town.
