Robins Secure Comfortable Progression in MPC
Report by Dave Robinson.
Ashton moved into the 2nd round of the Manchester Premier Cup with an ultimately comfortable win over a combative New Mills outfit. The visitors were first out of the blocks as Horrocks cut inside Johnson and crossed for Fish whose volley was held by Phillips. Danny Caldecott then had a 25 yard effort saved and then saw his cross sliced narrowly wide of his own goal by Barras – the resulting corner being headed back across goal by Lynch and touched home by Burns to give Ashton an early advantage.
There was no time for the Robins to rest on their laurels as Meakin immediately provided a defence splitting pass which was easily converted by Fish and on the quarter hour a square ball reached Meakin who shot straight at Phillips. Ashton switched back onto attack and a corner from the left found Burns totally unmarked 6 yards out and he easily converted for his 5th goal in the last 8 days. Burns was narrowly wide shortly afterwards as he sought to complete his hat trick and Baguley provided an effort on the turn from 25 yards but shot straight at Mills.
New Mills attempted to level things up at the interval and their best effort came from Meakin who hammered in a shot from the edge of the area which was well held by Phillips in the home goal and the visitors continued to press at the start of the 2nd period as the ball was laid off to Grimshaw whose curling effort was too high.
A fine long ball by Frost then set Mulholland free and he cut inside 2 defenders before seeing his effort blocked and on the opposite wing Johnson reached the byline but Burns backheeled attempt drifted wide of the target. Bowler then miscontrolled a pass allowing Burns to nip in but his effort floated over the bar and Mulholland then tricked his way past a defender in the area and appeared to be clearly brought down but the referee was unmoved.
A fine clearing header by Frost set Ben Deegan free but his attempted chip was held by keeper Mills but it was the introduction of substitute Kosylo which turned the tie in Ashton’s favour as Caldecott won the ball in midfield and played him in down the right wing, Kosylo cutting inside the defender and deftly chipping over the advancing keeper and then followed up by winning a tackle before exchanging passes with Deegan and curling his effort against the post, the ball coming back across goal enabling him to finish from close range.
The final scoreline could have been a tad harsh on the visitors but Ashton continued their impressive recent form and will look forward to the draw for the next round.
