Patience Is A Virtue
Robins Work Hard For Victory
Ashton United came away from New Mills with a victory in their final pre-season game. In a very competitive match both sets of players were out to impress their respective managers. Ashton looked to be playing more of a possession type game with New Mills opting for the more direct approach, which seemed to suit their game.
From an Ashton point of view the more notable incidents were a first half screaming shot from Burke that smashed onto the crossbar leaving the keeper rooted to the spot, and towards the end of the game an excellent one handed instinctive point blank save from the home keeper that denied a goal.
The second period was somewhat disjointed by substitutions although most players turned in credible performances. The game was settled by the wasp like Martin Pilkington who was buzzing around the box throughout his brief foray on the pitch. A scintillating burst of speed from Obadaki on the right wing took him past a couple of defenders. His fierce drive across the box from the byline was turned into the net off Pilkingtons upper body, much to the disappointment of the home players and fans who believed they had done enough to earn a share of the spoils.
So that's it then! Pre-season over and time to step up to the plate for the first home game against Grantham on 17th August at Hurst Cross. Although who will actually step up to that plate is going to be a tough decision for the management due. With a whole new squad there is sure to be movement in the team selection over the coming weeks as players learn about each other and they settle, or otherwise, into the pattern of play required. One thing for sure is that we have a great team spirit and a selection of players, on paper at least, that are more than capable of holding their own in the League. Now is the time to go out there and show what you can do.
