Ashton Grind Out Victory Over The Millers
Report by Dave Robinson.
Ashton won their penultimate friendly fixture with a comfortable victory in Derbyshire. Fitton was first to threaten for the hosts as his forward pass to Douglas-Pringle saw the effort skied over the top before Fitton’s corner was headed just over the bar by Smith. On the quarter hour a pass from the back found Gary Gee running free in the left channel and his square pass left Richard Bennett with a tap in to open the scoring.
Chadwick’s right wing cross then picked out Martin Pilkington who fired wide when well placed. Douglas-Pringle was able to turn well in the area but dragged his shot past the near post after which Pilkington beat his man but saw his near post effort deflected wide. Just past the halfway mark a fine crossfield pass from Pearson picked out Chadwick who beat his man before slotting the second goal past Pugh and as the break approached the home keeper touched over Chadwick’s 20 yard free kick.
The Millers found a way back into the game within 10 minutes of the restart as Gorton was penalised for handball and Grimshaw guided home a free kick from 20 yards. Chadwick’s deep cross then saw Gorton head the ball back across the area to be knocked wide by Pilkington but only a couple more minutes had elapsed when the same forward outpaced the defence before firing a fine right foot finish to make the scoreline 1-3.
Substitute Haslam then made good progress down the right and found Tuanzebe whose shot beat the keeper but also the near post and a free kick saw Grimshaw head wide of the near post before Fitton fired wide of the other post after turning past Coo.
