Ashton United suffered an embarrassing reverse at home to one of last season’s relegated teams now managed by the ex-Ashton duo of Tom Baker and Chris Denham. After 5 minutes a clever reverse pass by Shaw played in Lambert but Martin was quickly off his line to smother but the visitors moved ahead on 18 minutes as a mistake by Steven Mason allowed McDonagh to advance on the keeper and win an obvious penalty which he converted confidently. On the stroke of half time a long cross field pass by McDonagh reached Ben Deegan and he outwitted Luke Horrocks before firing home the second.
Sub Chris Baguley almost pulled one back for the hosts as his long range effort came back off the crossbar in a swirling wind but just before the hour McDonagh won his second penalty as he was brought down by Joel Melia and once again beat Martin with ease from the spot. The final goal arrived on 70 minutes as a through ball from Bromley found Porya Ahmadi beating the offside trap and finishing confidently to complete the scoring.
Baguley’s forward pass then found Martin Pilkington volleying well over before Baguley himself had a 20 yard effort saved by Saunders and there was just time for sub Adam Morning to hit the right hand post for Ashton after a fine cross field run.
Team: Martin, Mason, Horrocks, Gorton, Wilson, Connor, Hall, Rick, Abadaki, Leadbetter, Sutherland.
Subs: Gee, Melai, Pilkington, Hill, Harrop, O’Connor, Baguley, Morning.
