Magpies Swoop To Steal The Show!
Report by David Robinson.
Ashton were outclassed at Hurst Cross by last season’s play off final losers in the Conference North now solely managed by ex-Premier League player Matt Jansen. With Billy Priestley making his debut in the back four Ashton immediately moved onto the attack and a 1-2 between Adam Morning and Jayden Hall saw the latter fired wide before he hit another effort which this time was too high.
The Magpies hit back as an incisive pass from Whitham picked out Carver’s run before he sliced well wide and a quick throw out then saw Morning pick out Chris Sutherland who provided another wild finish. Midway through the half a sharp turn by James Dean on the edge of the area saw him just clear the crossbar before Chris Baguley forced Sam Ashton to fist away his 20 yard effort – Hall netting the rebound from an offside position.
The visitors then stepped up the pace and took the lead just past the half hour as Carver’s left wing cross picked out Almond’s run into the area and his low shot provided the opening goal and Almond was again on the score sheet as a deep cross from Whitham saw Martin miss the ball allowing the winger to head home. Still before the interval a fine move saw Almond’s pass play Hine in at the by line and he finished well from a narrow angle.
Just past the hour Sutherland almost pulled one back as his 30 yard chip was held just under the crossbar but the hosts did then get on to the scoreboard as Leadbetter’s cross to the far post saw Whitham head the ball back across goal allowing Sam Wilson to head home from close range. Chorley were still to have the final word via ex-Ashton favourite Aaron Burns firstly as he converted Stephenson’s cross from close range after a fine pass from Guy and then immediately Hine’s cross allowed him to provide another close range finish.
