Robins Return Pointless
Ill Discipline Costs Ashton Dear Yet Again! Report by David Robinson.
Ashton’s faltering start to the league campaign continued with defeat to the only goal on Merseyside as ill-discipline on the field once again took its toll. With joint manager Paul Phillips already serving a suspension club captain, Jay Gorton was dismissed 10-minutes before the interval for an apparent kicking incident in the opposition penalty area.
Shortly afterwards things got even worse as a long ball forward saw goalkeeper Cook make an ill-advised excursion from his line allowing home centre forward Codling to roll the ball into the empty net. Codling had been involved in the hosts’ first attack as his shot spun across the area and Whitehall went down as Roberts-Nurse dwelt on the ball but penalty appeals were waved away. Chris Baguley then won the ball well in midfield but cleared the stop netting with his effort before Pilkington’s square layoff found Chadwick shooting straight at Cooper. Pilkington then picked up Chadwick’s pass and forced Cooper into a low save before the best move to date involved an exchange between Chadwick and Marsh which saw the winger find the side netting. Ashton could have equalised before the break but Haslam’s left wing cross was headed straight at the keeper by Chris Baguley.
The Mariners were first on the offensive after the resumption and a driven pass by Clair saw Short’s cross on the run evade everyone. Matty Chadwick then won a free kick for Ashton which Baguley attempted to sneak in at the near post but pulled his effort wide and then at the other end a poor touch by Coo saw Whitehall just denied at the last by Cook. Clair’s corner was headed just past the near post by Whitehall before Whitehall’s cross reached Short whose effort was goal bound but appeared to hit his own player.
With time almost up Ashton still almost found an equaliser as first Pilkington found space in the area and teed up Gary Gee who hit the outside of the post before Chris Baguley’s dipping free kick almost found its way into the net but was just touched onto the crossbar by a fine save from Cooper.
