Robins Romp Home!
Ashton United coast past lacklustre Dabbers outfit. Report by David Robinson.
Ashton scored their second away win of the week with a convincing victory over former manager Danny Johnson’s Nantwich outfit. The opposition had a familiar look about it with former strikers Aaron Burns and Iain Howard featuring as well as Matty Kosylo who came off the bench but it was Matty Chadwick who was the talisman for the visitors with 2 goals in the first period.
Just 5 minutes had elapsed when Gary Gee gathered a loose ball in midfield and picked out Chadwick’s run into the area and the winger provided a confident left foot finish. Lee Rick saw a low effort turned away by Stevenson before Winslade latched on to a return pass from Howard for the Dabbers but Phillips was quickly off his line. The action stepped up just after the midway point of the half as a flick on from Burns saw Winslade just miss the angle on his right foot before the hosts drew level as Max Harrop curled a fine 30 yard free kick into the top corner.
Ashton immediately showed what they are made of as Rick’s pass put Pilkington clean through on Stevenson – his effort was rolling just wide of the post when Chadwick appeared to touch it home. There could have been further goals in the first half as Andy White dribbled his way to the edge of the area and set up Blake for a near miss before Pilkington could have made it 3-1 after a pass was intercepted but was thwarted by the home keeper.
After the break Chadwick went close to his hat-trick when he cut inside before firing straight at the keeper but on 57 minutes a great turn by Pilkington saw him play in Lee Rick for a fine low finish and shortly afterwards a quick clearance by Phillips saw Chadwick outmuscle White before lobbing too high. With 20 minutes to go Ashley Young’s ball found Phil Marsh beating the offside trap before he squared the ball to Rick who clipped the crossbar when scoring looked easier. Another incisive pass from Young picked out Richard Bennett whose chip was just touched away by Stevenson before a pass from the left wing saw Rick steady himself before hitting the left hand post from 20 yards.
Town strived in vain to get back into the contest and came closest when a cross was flicked on by Burns to Howard who was crowded out before Howard’s flick saw Adam Jones denied at close range by Phillips.
