Honours Even In Derby Clash!
Weather the winner as flowing football takes a back seat. Report by David Robinson.
Honours finished even as the two Ashton teams shared 4 goals at a windswept Hurst Cross. With both sides missing their regular custodians Ashton were also without the suspended Gary Gee and Curzon the injured Jamie Knowles. The game got off to a flying start with 2 goals in the opening ten minutes – Martin Pilkington firing the hosts ahead on 7 minutes as a ball broke to him and he collected a rebound off a defender before firing home his third goal against the Nash this season.
The visitors were level within 2 minutes when a corner reached Cummins at the far post and he had time to steady before hitting the roof of the net. The tempo then calmed as both sides continued to give possession away on a very tricky playing surface and it was midway through the half before Lee Rick’s free kick rebounded off Jack Higgins for keeper Mason to gather. Joe Guest’s run for Curzon then allowed Warburton to fire a cross-shot right across the area before Guest was dismissed for a clash with Sam Wilson following an incident in the home penalty area.
With the conditions deteriorating by the minute after the interval Ashley Young came close as he caught a rebound sweetly only for his effort to be deflected out for a corner from which Jay Gorton’s header drifted wide. With a quarter of an hour to play Greg Pearson’s long free kick was flicked on by Gorton into Mason’s arms before Chris Baguley brought a flying save out of the visiting keeper from 25 yards. Curzon then moved into the lead with 12 minutes on the clock as they caught Ashton on the break and Rowney was able to tee up substitute Brooke who converted confidently.
The Robins were now up against it but with only 3 minutes left Nico Collins making his first team debut from the bench beat the offside trap and put in a fine cross which was touched home by Dale Johnson and Ashton could have grabbed an unlikely victory as a long free kick fell to Higgins who sidefooted straight at Mason.
