Victory On The Road!
Robins secure three more vital promotion points at struggling Stamford. Report by David Robinson.
Ashton United kept up their promotion push with a vital victory on their first visit to Stamford’s Zeeco Stadium. With Keith Briggs starting in midfield for the first time, the visitors needed to be wary because despite the hosts starting the afternoon in the relegation positions they were chasing their fourth successive victory in this fixture.
Chris Baguley got his usual long range effort out of the way as early as possible, almost catching Stevens out from the kick off and forcing the keeper to tip over. For the home side Meade beat the offside trap and sent over a right wing cross which saw Jordan Smith’s low effort held by Phillips. Just before the half hour Ben Deegan became the third visiting player to be booked, the referee initially showing him a second yellow before realising his error.
Meade then sent over another deep cross which saw Greg Smith’s hanging header cleared off the line by Jack Higgins and at the other end a scramble in the area resulted in Baguley’s squeezed effort being cleared for a corner from which Jay Gorton headed Ashton’s best chance of the half narrowly wide.
The second half had only being underway 10 minutes when Coppin’s long throw saw Gary Gee fouled by Richard Jones as he went for the ball and the resulting penalty was confidently despatched by Baguley. A cross from the by line then saw Gorton make a slight contact on its way through to substitute Clements who sliced his effort wide before Kayde Coppin cut inside at the other end but sent his effort sailing over. Dale Johnson’s forward pass then found Martin Pilkington rounding the keeper but unable to finish the job, dragging his effort into the side netting but he immediately made amends as a great run took him past 3 defenders and he set up Johnson for a first time left foot finish.
With the Daniels starting to run out of ideas a square pass picked out Clements who fired well over but he made a better fist of his second effort testing Phillips from the edge of the area and Johnson could have made the score line even more comfortable only being denied by the legs of Stevens.
Team: Phillips, Mason, Wilson, Gorton, Higgins, Gee, Briggs (Young), Baguley, Johnson, Pilkington (Rick) & Deegan (Coppin).
