Robins Grind Out Victory!
A clean sheet and three points will do just fine! Report by David Robinson.
Ashton scraped a win in their first ever encounter with Ramsbottom at Hurst Cross. With Max Harrop debuting for the Robins on the right wing it was the visitors who provided an early scare with Heron firing over after 2 minutes after he had cut back inside from Rother’s pass.
Harrop then made a good run into the area but his work was wasted as centre forward Dale Johnson took too long over the chance, and a throw in then fell to Harrop whose low effort was saved at the foot of the post by Shenton as the game got off to a lively start. Lee Rick was next to try his luck as Martin Pilkington laid a ball back for him to fire wide from 20 yards and at the other end ex-Robin Matty Burke sent a 30 yard free kick into Ashton’s wall before firing the rebound too high. Harrop was still getting in the action for the hosts and his crossfield pass allowed fellow winger Kayde Coppin to cut inside Bowyer before he dragged his effort wide of the near post.
Another ex-Ashton player Abadaki then cut inside Sam Wilson and saw Phillips beat away his shot before Ian Bennett’s pass picked out Mukendi who should have given the Rams the lead but allowed Phillips to make the save low down. Ashton were still striving for the breakthrough after the restart and a long ball saw Dale Johnson produce a weak effort on the turn straight at Shenton but their prayers were answered on 70 minutes as a long pass by substitute Chris Baguley was kept in play with typical determination by Martin Pilkington and his cross was knocked home by the joyful figure of Baguley.
Gary Gee then won the ball in midfield and set Johnson free for a cross which was just headed clear by Alex Frost for a corner which Jay Gorton eventually headed into Shenton’s arms. Pilkington then again won the ball near the by line and set up Baguley for a shot which went swinging wide of the far post and the visitors’ last throw of the dice in trying to find the equaliser saw player-manager Jon Robinson enter the fray and send in a shot from distance which was easily held by Phillips.
Team: Phillips, Wilson, Pearson, Gorton, Higgins, Young, Harrop (Hill), Rick (Gee), Johnson, Pilkington & Coppin (Baguley).
