Wind Deals A Blow To Robins!
League ambitions take a knock. Report by David Robinson.
Ashton United lost a disappointing encounter in Leicestershire following an uncharacteristic error from goalkeeper Paul Phillips after a goalless draw had looked very much on the cards. With Gary Gee absent through illness Keith Briggs started his second game in midfield but only lasted until midway through the first half when a knee injury saw him replaced by Max Harrop – one of four wingers on the bench.
On a bobbly pitch with a significant slope on it, a dangerous cross by Towers was cleared by Jack Higgins before Pilkington’s layoff was fired off target from 20 yards by Briggs. A forward pass then picked out Brennan for the home side and his shot was deflected narrowly wide off Jay Gorton. With the ball bypassing midfield in the main the next chance saw a foul by Higgins lead to Jenno’s header being held by Phillips from Hickey’s free kick.
With the interval in sight a fine move saw Melvin released to the byline with Sam Wilson just able to clear his cross to safety and Dale Johnson then appear to be dragged down by Jenno in the home penalty area with Mr Plowright unmoved.
Within 5 minutes of the resumption a long ball into the area saw Chris Baguley able to turn and fire in a left foot effort which just hit the side netting but the hosts could have moved ahead as a cross into the area saw Carney’s header drop for Hickey to hit narrowly wide on the volley. With a stalemate looking increasingly likely the hosts got lucky as a right wing cross from Towers was just too high for Phillips who palmed the ball into the Ashton net in trying to divert it for a corner.
The rest of the half was a frustration for the Robins as they rarely looked likely to find an equaliser, Dale Johnson volleying wide of goal after a thrown in had been headed on and Martin Pilkington cutting back inside but just missing the near post. In fact Barwell themselves could have doubled their tally as a throw in saw Hickey’s square pass present Nisevic with a fine opportunity which he side footed over the stop netting and a quick break lead to Brannan’s 20 yard effort being pushed away by Phillips for a corner.
