Last Gasp Winner Brings Home The Spoils
Report by David Robinson
An all action encounter saw Ashton emerge victorious from Stamford’s Zeeco Stadium after the home side were reduced to 9 men. The hosts were the first to register an effort on target as Bell’s free kick reached the portly figure of Greg Smith whose weak effort was gathered by Phillips. With 18 minutes played Ashton moved ahead as Phillips’ long clearance was just kept in play by Aaron Burns and his cross was headed home at the back post by Adam Morning for Ashton’s first league goal of the season.
With 8 minutes of the half remaining and somewhat against the run of play the Daniels drew level as a long ball saw Jordan Smith outwit Sam Wilson forcing Kyle Jacobs to bring him down in the area – Andy Hall firing home fiercely and still before the break Clements put over a cross from the right wing which allowed the unmarked Greg Smith to head home.
Burns had 2 chances to bring the Robins level after the interval, firstly playing a slick 1-2 with Dale Johnson before shooting just over and then a long clearance saw him round Knight in the home goal but Carr was on hand to clear off the line. The home side then extended their lead as a quick break saw Hall’s shot parried out by Phillips, the rebound hitting Jordan Smith before rolling over the line, before Challinor and Jordan Smith combined to provide a cross which saw Powell’s effort just squeezed out at the near post.
With 20 minutes remaining Ashton found a lifeline as Johnson’s flick put substitute Pilkington clear on goal and he was felled in the area by last defender Richard Jones who was rightly red carded, Jordan Smith also being dismissed for persistent dissent and after a lengthy delay Chris Baguley rolled home the penalty. With Ashton finding more space they almost drew level as Chris Sutherland’s cross saw Joel Melia’s point blank volley saved by Knight but with 8 minutes left matters were levelled up as Johnson teed up Baguley for a low effort which was pushed out leaving Joe Connor with an unmissable open goal.
With the visitors now pressing for the winner a cross reached Jacobs whose stabbed effort was grabbed by Knight before almost with the last kick of the game Baguley saw his low effort hit the post with the rebound being blocked by the keeper but the loose ball fell to Stephen Mason who converted from close range.
