Seagulls Swoop With Late Winner
Match report by David Robinson
Ashton suffered another home reverse in a game which may have turned on a controversial decision by Mr Greenhalgh. Aaron Burns chased a through ball with 80 minutes on the clock and appeared to fall over visiting keeper Sanna but the referee judged the incident worthy of a dismissal and 2 minutes later winger Booth reached the byline for Colwyn Bay and crossed for the unmarked Jordan Fagbola to head home the winner.
Martin Pilkington had been the first to threaten for the hosts immediately picking up a loose pass but shooting just wide and Williams’ cross for Bay then saw Priestly and Phillips get mixed up before the ball was scrambled away. With ten minutes gone Kyle Jacobs’ long pass put Pilkington free but he was just denied by Sanna racing out of his area, and Jacobs then picked out fellow wing back Cavell Coo who tricked his way into the area but saw his cross blocked.
The Seagulls should have moved ahead after 25 minutes but Love provided a glaring miss after Sharp’s cross had picked him out and Sharp himself then saw his own effort from a tight angle pushed away. Pilkington then rounded the keeper but found the angle too tight and his cross saw Joe Connor’s effort deflected over the top but the visitors moved ahead on the stroke of half time as Booth’s cross reached Denton at the back post and his return ball was rifled home by Hopley.
Dale Johnson volleyed Chris baguley’s corner over the bar right at the start of the second half but it needed a vital interception by Kale Jacobs to stop Hopley on the turn after Booth had played him into the area. Sharp then outmuscled Priestly and was denied by a low save with Williams also being thwarted from the rebound but the hosts finally drew level midway through the half as a long free kick saw Aaron Burns turn a cross in from the by line which was touched home from close range by Johnson.
Ashton were now pressing for the winner and Connor’s cross saw Gorton and Priestly contesting the same ball with the latter heading on to the roof of the net, and Jacobs’ cross was then met by a powerful header from Priestly which went off target. The visitors could have registered a third goal as a cross dropped to Love who pulled his effort wide of goal.
