Robins Kick Start Their Season. Report by David Robinson

Ashton finally got their home season under way with 2 second half goals good enough to see off their visitors from North Yorkshire. The game got off to slow start with plenty of passes going astray and it was midway through the half before Adam Morning made a good run and his inside pass sent martin Pilkington into the area but he ran into defenders before Mason cut inside for Whitby but saw his left foot effort hit Joe Connor.

A volleyed clearance by Jay Gorton then found Morning cutting into the area but unable to beat Fryer at his near post but the best chance was carved out by Pilkington with a great run from halfway which took him past 3 defenders before he set up Chris Baguley who skied a disappointing effort over the bar. Halftime was extended to allow a fuse to be change in the floodlights and it was Ashton who emerged from the darkness and made the breakthrough on 48 minutes as Pilkington’s pass released Morning for a fine right wing cross which was headed home emphatically by Baguley.

The goalscorer then sent a 30 yard free kick just wide of the right hand post after a foul on Pilkington and Gary Gee’s forward pass then found Pilkington cutting inside and bringing a flying save out of Fryer in the Seasiders’ goal. Ashton were getting closer to extending their advantage as an interchange between Pilkington and Morning saw the former fire his effort right across goal but the visitors gave a warning as Shepherd’s pass picked out Waters whose shot was deflected for a corner which saw Lee Mason’s shot fall to Waters and he sent in a left foot effort which cannoned back off the cross bar.

Substitute Brown saw a shot from 25 yards for Whitby easily gathered by Phillips before he came to meet Martin’s corner but helped it over the top but with 7 minutes remaining the Robins made the points safe as Stephen Mason’s long free kick saw Dale Johnson’s flick fired home by Aaron Burns for his first goal since returning from Chorley.

Team: Phillips, Jacobs, Mason, Gorton, Connor, Haining (Coo), Baguley, Gee, Pilkington (Sutherland), Johnson Morning (Burns). SNU: Bove, Halford.
