Poor Finishing Sees Robins Fall To Late Silverlands Spot Kick
Report by David Robinson
Ashton were beaten by a late penalty at Buxton’s Silverlands ground with the game being decided by 3 dead ball goals. The visitors would have been disappointed to be trailing at the interval having dominated the opening period only to fall behind to Ash Burbeary’s free kick after Jay Gorton had fouled Liam Hardy.
The Robins really should have been ahead by then having carved out several good opportunities, the first of which saw Chris Sutherland release Chris Baguley after a quick break, the latter only being denied by the outstretched arm of Barnes at the expense of a corner. A long ball into the area then saw Dale Johnson stretching to provide a cross which was only cleared after a series of ricochets and Matty Chadwick then made a great run but saw his right foot effort fisted out to Baguley whose shot was blocked.
Ashton continued in the same vein after the break as a fine touch by Sutherland released Chadwick with Greg Young across to make the block but it was the introduction of substitute Martin Pilkington which really galvanised Ashton to find the equaliser. Firstly a great turn allowed him to play in Baguley who went round the keeper but was crowded out, next he played Johnson clear into the area, with Barnes once again out quickly to block. There was to be no denying Pilkington on the third occasion as he collected a long clearance and was felled in the area by last man Young who was fortunate to be only booked, Baguley’s perfect penalty completion success continuing.
With the game now back in the balance the Bucks could have retaken the lead as another long ball saw Hardy beat Phillips to the ball but lob his effort just wide, and on 73 minutes a Will Haining corner landed perfectly on Jay Gorton’s head, the ball coming back off the underside of the bar with Barnes nowhere. The hosts then had an offside goal ruled out and Young headed Burbeary’s free kick over the top but with 2 minutes remaining Hardy picked up a fine pass down the right wing and cut inside to be brought down just inside the area by Cavell Coo, Hardy firing home the winner himself from the spot.
