Gorton finishes the job. Report by David Robinson
The Robins of Ilkeston finally made it on to the pitch for the first time this season following much publicised financial issues but it was the other Robins who collected all 3 points after a low-key affair ended in a comfortable victory.
With Gary Gee absent, Richard Smith moved to right back for Ashton with Alex Frost drafted in at centre back but it was Luis Rose who immediately forced Phillips into a low save after an exchange of passes with Mark Shelton. A loose ball in midfield then dropped to Lee Gaskell who lobbed wide from well out and the other no.10 Anton Brown was then just denied by a last ditch tackle from Frost. Midway through the half a great exchange of passes sent Adam Mather into the host’s area where he was denied first by Matt Baker before keeper Durrant saved the follow up. Just past the half hour Ilkeston could have taken the lead as Luke Foster powered in a header from Coleman’s corner which needed Tunji Moses to help it against the crossbar on its way to safety.
After Gaskell had miscued a great chance Ashton also hit the woodwork, courtesy of Chris Baguley’s 30 yard free kick and Jay Gorton then soon glanced home Mather’s free kick from an offside position. The breakthrough was not far away however, and arrived just before the break as Wilkins played in Gaskell whose shot was palmed away to leave Mark Lees with a tap in. Following heavy rain during the interval the hosts brought on Dexter Atkinson and he immediately missed a great chance from Goddard’s cross, meanwhile sub Cavell Coo’s pull back saw Lees tee up Baguley for an effort side footed wide.
Just ahead of the hour mark Baguley’s free kick from out wide was headed home by Gorton who then continued a dispute by squaring up to Brown resulting in a yellow card for the Ashton captain. With the game now up the home side were reduced to an effort by Atkinson who made space on the edge of the area before firing straight at Phillips and a Rose effort which needed to be carefully watched by the Ashton keeper.
