Robins Sunk By Mariners
Mariners secure quickfire double. Report by David Robinson
Marine secured all three points with their second convincing victory in 3 days at Hurst Cross. Just 6 minutes had elapsed when Saturday’s one-way traffic resumed as Bellew’s left wing corner slipped through Terry Smith’s grasp leaving Adam Hughes to tap home from close range.
Hughes’ pass inside the full back then saw Bellew overhit his cross and the Robins were then saved as Smith just scrambled away Smart’s free header at the back post. Lee Gaskell put a free kick just wide after Cavell Coo had been fouled after 20 minutes but ten minutes later a bizarre second gave the hosts a mountain to climb as a loose ball broke to Kurt Sherlock who sent an effort in from fully on the halfway line which deceived Smith and went in off the post.
The returning Lee Knight then sped into the area for Ashton but saw his shot blocked before a well weighted ball into the area saw Bellew round Smith before the keeper collected the winger’s attempted chip. 3 minutes before the interval the points were safe for the visitors as a far post cross was headed home by Smart and just 5 minutes after the resumption Danny Mitchley took down a long goal kick and sent a raking effort just wide of Ashton’s goal.
A mistake by Joe Connor could have then seen the Mariners move even further ahead as Monaghan’s back heel saw Smith bring off a decent save from Mitchley and at the other end a cross was cleared to Coo who steered his effort wide before his layoff caught Mark Lees
shooting off target. Bobby Lofthouse then saw a swinging cross helped against the crossbar by Hare before Knight and Gaskell combined for the latter to see his shot almost escape the keeper’s grasp.
Knight then saw a decent cross headed wide by Lees but the Robins did finally register as a clearance hit Lees and rebounded against the bar for Knight to knock home the rebound but the final word went to the visitors as a move through the middle saw the ball deflected to Bellew who provided an easy finish.
