Robins return to winning ways
Report by David Robinson
Ashton twice came from behind to take all 3 points at Hurst Cross for the first time in a month against their visitors from Derbyshire with Richard Smith returning from suspension to register twice.
The Robins got off to the better start as Mark Lees saw his effort from Dominic Smalley’s cross tipped over by Jake Eastwood and Maiese then headed another Smalley cross over the top. Mickleover then had a shot blocked in the area with Baskerville squeezing the rebound wide but midway through the half they moved ahead as a long ball down the middle found Zeph Thomas beating the offside trap before lobbing home. Sports then assumed a measure of control as Baskerville glanced Thomas’s cross wide and it took a great pass from Richard Smith to set up Lee Knight whose cross was blocked by Bennett.
After the interval it took another Smith pass to set up Knight again with Eastwood quickly off his line to block and it was midway through the half before Ashton found the equaliser as Lee Gaskell sent in a free kick from 40 yards having been fouled by ex-pro Clinton Morrison which Smith deflected home, but within a minute the visitors restored their lead as Andy Dales’ pass into the area found Thomas in too much space and he rifled home his second on the volley.
The frenzy of goals still hadn’t finished as only one minute later Smith’s cross saw Domenico Maiese’s header saved at the foot of the post and Stephen Mason returned the ball across goal forcing Albert Lansdowne to concede an own goal. Schofield then saw his free kick deflect wide off Mills for Sports but it fell to Smith to have the final word as Mason’s inside pass saw him move past Danny Schofield before firing home an unstoppable winner. With time almost up a free kick for the visitors saw Schofield’s delivery deflected narrowly wide allowing the Robins to hold on to the points.
