Frosty At The Double
Report by David Robinson
The points were shared following a high-scoring encounter on Ashton’s first visit to Corby’s Steel Park ground. With joint manager Will Haining drafted back into midfield it was the hosts straight on to the attack as Traynor’s through ball saw Crawford get the better of Branagan in the visiting goal only to put the rebound into the side netting.
A fine cross field pass from Maiese then saw Gaskell unable to get sufficient power behind his effort before Branagan pulled off a fine save low to his right from Gascoigne’s header. A minute later and the hosts did register as Branagan punched out a corner which was returned into the goal by centre back Jamie Tank but 3 minutes later the Robins drew level as Jack Dorney’s long free kick was headed against the bar by Smith with Alex Frost bundling the loose ball over the line.
Stephen Mason then saw his header from Dorney’s corner cleared off the line by Fox and just past the half hour a long pass from Maiese saw Fox head past his own keeper leaving Lee Gaskell the simplest of tasks to give the visitors the lead. Ashton then looked to have established some sort of control but on the stroke of half time Stefan Moore’s pass into the area saw James Jenson turning away from Mason who conceded a penalty, confidently converted by Moore.
The second half had just got underway when Lee Knight’s cross saw Mark Lees denied from close in with the rebound falling for Frost to convert his second goal and Maiese’s left wing cross then saw Dorney side footing wide of the target. A corner was then headed back across goal by Gascoigne with Frost clearing the danger before Dorney’s delivery from the left was headed horribly wide by the unmarked Gaskell. Ashton were then made to pay as Moore forced Branagan into a sharp save low to his left but a poor clearance by the keeper then led to Moore having a clear run on goal, the referee award his second penalty of the afternoon as Branagan brought the centre forward down although the keeper seemed to make contact with the ball first.
After Moore had converted the penalty he brought another decent save out of Branagan before a good ball from sub Rio Murray saw Knight just denied by the onrushing Connor and a forward pass saw Gaskell beat the offside trap before blazing over.
