Workington complete Double at Hurst Cross
Match report by David Robinson
Visitors Workington completed a league double at Hurst Cross to keep their play off hopes alive. Josh Stachini moved to left back for the Robins who got off to a bad start as Conor Tinnion’s corner was headed home from inside the 6 yard box by Joshua Calvert to give the visitors the advantage but within 3 minutes the hosts drew level as Ryan Crowther sent Matty Chadwick beyond the last defender for his 18th goal of the season as the game got off to an open start.
Approaching the interval Max Cartwright was booked for pulling back Scott Allison with Robert Wilson putting the free kick off the underside of the bar with Calvert heading the rebound over the top. 3 minutes into the second period and Chadwick beat a defender before hitting the side netting and on the hour Lee Knight took down Dominic Smalley’s cross and just missed Crowther before the compliment was returned as a deep cross just evaded Knight.
6 minutes later and Samuel Joel’s pass saw Tinnion’s long cross come back off the inside of the post but after Smalley had been booked for fouling Waterston, Simpson’s free kick was headed over the line, as adjudged by the linesman, despite Mark Lees’ best efforts to clear it. As Ashton tried to find the equaliser Ryan Crowther hit a loose ball over the top but the Reds were able to hold on to inflict the Robins’ first home defeat since December.
