Robins Round Up Rangers
Report by David Robinson
Ashton duly completed the double over Stafford with an ultimately comfortable victory over their mid-table rivals. With Stephen Mason absent Richard Smith stepped in at centre half as the action started with something of an end of season feel about it. Taylor’s deep cross for Rangers was headed back by Bachelor before being helped over the bar and from the resulting corner Ben Haseley’s low shot beat Pilling but was cleared off the line by Dominic Smalley.
Midway through the half a quick free kick saw Ryan Crowther firing wide from 25 yards before a low effort from Josh Stachini forced Whitehouse to concede a corner which was only cleared as far as Mark Lees who fired his left foot effort in off the post. The visitors almost drew level on the stroke of half time as Richard Smith picked up a booking for fouling Barton on the edge of the area and the free kick saw Taylor’s shot touched on to the bar by Pilling.
Ten minutes after the restart and Ashton doubled their lead as Stachini’s pass into the area saw Chadwick squeeze his effort underneath Whitehouse and a great interchange between Stachini and Chadwick then saw the former just miss the far post. Lees then came close to registering again after Chadwick and Crowther combined for him to fire straight at Whitehouse and as Rangers tried to hit back a lay off found sub Jack Heath firing too high.
Chadwick then reached the by line twice being denied in turn by Bailey and the keeper before Stafford pulled a goal back with 4 minutes left as Tyler Lyttle converted James Bowen’s long throw following a scramble but the Robins could have sealed the result as a great overlapping run by Smalley saw Chadwick side foot his cross against the post. The final effort from the visitors saw a throw in flicked on for Barton to head it over the top.
