Ashton Peg Back Bucks
Report by David Robinson
Ashton turned in one of their best performances of the season to get the better of their play- off chasing hosts on a heavy pitch at the Tarmac Silverlands stadium. With the visitors at full strength the Bucks welcomed back forward Liam Hardy from Darlington but it was the Robins almost off to a flyer as Matty Chadwick picked up a long pass before seeing his effort blocked by Burns and the centre forward then won a free kick out wide which he put straight into Budtz’s arms.
At the other end Luke Pilling cut out a far post cross before it could reach Hardy but on 13 minutes Chadwick’s pass from the right touchline picked out Ryan Crowther’s run into the area and he finished through the keepers’ legs, and Chadwick then fired in a hard cross from the by line which almost forced Burns into an own goal following good work by Dominic Smalley.
Chadwick then once again raced clear and cut inside Bembo-Leto before forcing a low save and Hardy then found himself in space but with insufficient strength to trouble Pilling. Josh Stachini then pursued a loose ball into the area before being crowded out and Chadwick’s latest cross saw Young testing out his own goalkeeper. Just before the half hour referee Mr Simpson had to be replaced after turning sharply with ex-Premier League ref Trevor Massey taking over as linesman following a 16 minute delay.
Five minutes before the break Crowther sprayed a superb ball out to the right wing and Chadwick’s low cross saw Crowther help his effort over the bar.
Straight after the resumption Crowther curled a free kick against the post and the resulting scramble saw Cartwright’s effort blocked but Jack Dyche’s resulting header was adjudged to have crossed the line.
With 25 minutes left a forward pass put Hardy clear to place his effort wide of goal but just 2 minutes later Grayson’s decent cross to the far post saw the unmarked Hardy reduce the deficit. Dyche then raced clear from halfway but placed the bobbling ball wide of goal and he then cut inside before delaying his shot too long before sub John Roberts saw his shot deflected wide. The final action saw Hardy’s cross from the by line evade everyone before Richard Smith had to be stretchered off in injury time.
