Single Goal Wins Battle Of Robins
Report by David Robinson
A single goal was enough for Ashton to see off the ‘other’ Robins in an end of season encounter with the visitors already relegated. Richard Smith started up front for the hosts and it was his run towards the penalty area which led to Matty Chadwick firing over and Chadwick was the main threat throughout the first period firing the latest of 3 attempts just past the post after 15 minutes as the match started with a feeling of ‘going through the motions’.
Ilkeston could have moved ahead 5 minutes before the break as a bouncing ball saw Anthony Dwyer’s effort come back off the crossbar and Charlie Duke came almost as close clipping the left hand post with an effort on the turn. In between times Dominic Smalley’s cross saw Chadwick force the kepper into a tip over from which the resulting corner bounced wide off Stephen Mason.
The only goal duly arrived on 52 minutes as Duke won a corner from which Josh Stachini’s deep delivery was headed home by Smith and Ashton could have extended the advantage shortly afterwards as another left wing cross from Chadwick was headed against the bar by Duke with Dale Eve well beaten. Ilkeston’s best forward Dwyer then turned past Mason before firing across goal and Chadwick’s through ball then put Lee Knight clear with Eve pulling off a decent save with his foot.
As the clock ran down Chadwick brought a useful save out of replacement keeper Jamie Hannis from a free kick with departing joint manager Will Haining signing off by heading Stachini’s corner wide on his final appearance and fellow joint manager Jody Banim then saw his lobbed attempt from Stachini’s through ball drift just wide.
