Sports Spoil Play-Off Push

Report by David Robinson. Pic Jez Sayle

Ashton were left frustrated after dropping two points at home as well as seeing two players dismissed in the second half. With several changes from their last game at Rushall the hosts made the perfect start as a loose pass saw John Pritchard pick up possession and his pass found Nic Evangelinos who slotted home the opener after 3 minutes. Unfortunately the centre forward went on to be stretchered off after half an hour after receiving a knock on the head whilst challenging for the ball.
Pritchard’s cross on 18 minutes found Jack Dyche just unable to get over his header and after Norcross had just failed to collect Baines-Homer’s return ball into the area Andy Dales picked up a pass and sped through the middle of Ashton’s defence before bringing a fine right hand save out of Carnell. The respite was only temporary however as Pablo Mills headed home unchallenged from the resulting corner.
Right on half time Nicky Platt hit a first time shot over after Pritchard’s cross had been cleared.

On the restart Daniel Mooney took down Ryan Makhosini’s pass superbly but fired over as both sides struggled on the heavy surface. Baines-Homer’s pass then sent Ollie Mulders to the by line from where his cross was knocked past the near post by Dales and sub Liam Tomsett appeared to be pulled back in the area by Jak Hickman with nothing being awarded.
With 20 minutes left Sports captain Jake Scott was sent off for a foul on Sam Sheridan and after Briscoe had beaten the offside trap only to be denied by Carnell, Dyche saw red for the Robins after catching Kevin Grocott. A corner then reached Aaron Chalmers whose effort just beat Mark Lees’ attempted touch and Makhosini was then dismissed for a second yellow card as he overran the ball and caught Dales.. The visitors could have stolen all the points as Dales one two with Jimmy Phillips saw him poke wide and Phillips himself then blazed over from Dales’ back heel.

Team: Carnell, Dom Smalley, Makhosini, Baines, Chalmers, Platt (Sheridan), Lees, Pritchard, Evangelinos (Deane Smalley), Mooney (Tomsett), Dyche. SNU: Roberts, Granite.
