Five Defeats On The Trot
Robins Look Over Their Shoulders At Chasing Pack
Report Steve Lee
Marine staged a second half comeback to leave Ashton United looking anxiously over their shoulders as the Robins slumped to a fifth straight defeat, the Mariners on the other hand enhanced their play off credentials.
A strong wind played a big part in the game, Ashton having the first use of it and just sixteen minutes into his debut, former Radcliffe man David Sherlock sent in a cross some 25-yards out that caught Callum Williams in no mans land as the ball floated over the keeper and into the back of the net.
Marine wasted a good chance to level a couple of minutes later as Darren Byers was through on goal, only to shoot over from close range.
Joe Fowler than tried his luck with a long range effort that curled wide of Chris Cheetham's far post, the young Ashton keeper then was called upon to save Paul Lundon's shot from the edge of the area.
A long clearance from Cheetham was missed by centre back Matty Brown, Aaron Burns produced a first time shot that went over the bar.
Ashton ended the half on top, a long throw from Sherlock was only partially cleared, but Matty Kosylo fired over and then the same player pounced on a loose ball after some defensive hesitancy, but Williams tipped his rasping drive over the bar.
Ian Latham produced a vital block following a corner and then the last action of the half saw Williams palm a free kick from Mark Peers away.
Marine grabbed the initiative in the second half and it came as no surprise when it was the Ashton defence that failed to cope with a ball pumped into the area, David Roberts was brushed off the ball and Byers fired past the advancing Cheetham.
Lundon had a shot following a turn that went over the bar as the Crosby side pressed for the winner, Nick Rogan shot wide shortly after as Ashton struggled to get any attacking momentum.
A rare attack saw Chris Amadi receive a pass from Ian Bennett, but the substitute saw his shot blocked, it proved crucial as the visitors went to the other end and carved the Robins defence open and Fowler easily converted Thomas Moore's cross to give Marine the lead.
Bennett had the only chance of a leveller late on as he raced onto Peers pass, only to shoot into the side netting.
