Relegated Sports Inflict Disappointing End to Season
Report by Steve Lee.
Ashton United's season ended in a whimper as they suffered a shock home defeat to second bottom Mickleover Sports.
Results elsewhere meant that despite their win, Mickleover's two season stay in the Evostik League's top tier ended barring any eleventh hour reprieve.
Ashton had an early effort through Ian Bennett, but he shot wide after a pass from Josh Rose.
Terry Smith had very little to do in the opening quarter of an hour but he was left red faced when he raced out of his goal and failed to reach the ball, Ashton looked to have thwarted Sports when Alex Steadman was crowded out, only for a poor clearance fell to Emeka Nwadike who scored from close range.
The Robins had a great chance to equalise as Warren Beattie got on the end of a cross, only to head straight at Damien Clarke with the goal at his mercy.
Rose had a long range effort that went wide before Bennett struck the post with a drive from the edge of the area.
Chris Amadi then produced a cross that saw Beattie fire wide and Ged Murphy produced another long range effort that was comfortably held by Clarke as Ashton pressed for an equaliser.
Bennett again struck the woodwork as his free kick struck the outside of the upright and then Aaron Burns produced a turn that wasn't matched with his shot that went well wide.
Burns had a rare Ashton effort early in the second half as he shot over after being well marked by the Sports defence.
Twenty minutes into the second period Sports increased their lead with a quick break down the left flank before susbtitute Mark Farthing was found in space on the right and he made no mistake with a fierce drive.
Smith produced an acrobatic save to deny David Moon as the Derbyshire side continued to look anything but relegation bound.
Ashton didn't have much idea to break down the Sports rearguard, in fact a goal kick from Smith posed more problems than many a move, the ball fell to Beattie, only his shot went over the bar.
Substitute Matty Kosylo cut in from the left, but he too couldn't keep his effort down.
In the final minute Karl Ashton was found in space by Moon and he made it three, but as it turned out, it was all in vain with Sports relegation rivals all picking up vital points.
