Brakes fail to stop Ashton

Report by David Robinson. Pics Jeremy Sayle

An injury time goal from debutant Liam Martin saw the Robins to their first home win of the season against their visitors from the Midlands. With Lewis Baines returning on loan from Fleetwood the hosts made the worst possible start as literally with their first attack the Brakes took the lead as Matt Regan failed to clear properly allowing Kieran Dunbar to provide the cross from which Ahmed Obeng headed the opener.
After Jordan Sangha missed his clearing header allowing Gittings to fire over the bar another mistake by Baines then needed Luke Pilling to pull off a fine reaction save as Matt Stenson set up Jack Edwards. Casian Anghel then fired into the side netting at the second attempt following Chadwick’s throw in but on 18 minutes the Robins drew level as Regan’s left wing cross wasn’t cleared properly and Bradley Jackson fired home emphatically.
Chadwick then saw a low effort saved and Bowden’s cross went right across goal for Leamington before Regan robbed Dunbar in the nick of time. Pilling then recovered just in time as Stenson headed Dunbar’s long ball past him and Jackson sliced Craig Hobson’s knockdown well off target at the other end.

After the break Matty Chadwick turned on to a throw in and sent a swinging effort over the top as Ashton built some pressure but Chadwick then saw yellow for going over too easily in the penalty area and soon after dragged a disappointing effort wide. Ashton then needed Sam Sheridan to come to the rescue as he cleared James Mack’s effort off the line following Dunbar’s corner. Inside the last ten minutes and Stenson’s free kick from the edge of the area needed another fine stop from Pilling and at the other end Chadwick’s free kick led to Regan’s header just being palmed away from the goal line by Tony Breeden.
Entering added time Jackson reached the by line and saw his cross eventually fall for Martin to convert from close range to grab the points and move the Robins up to 14th place in the league table.

Ashton Utd: Pilling, Hickman, Regan, Baines, Chalmers, Sheridan, Sangha; Jackson, Hobson (Lees 90), Anghel (Martin 74,) Chadwick. SNU: Sephton, Hill, Ashworth.
