Robins’ hopes buried at Cemetery Road

Ashton were denied a famous victory over the lead leaders by an injury time goal after dominating much of the proceedings at the Horsfall Stadium. With Matty Chadwick injured Liam Martin took over at centre forward and Aaron Chalmers was back in the centre of the defence and Ashton started with a pressing game which paid immediate dividends as Liam Martin won the ball and played in Bradley Jackson who placed his effort into the corner of Drench’s net after just 3 minutes.
Luke Ashworth then denied Jake Beesley from a through ball and Beesley could only get a glancing header on to McKenna’s following cross. Jackson’s cross was just too far ahead of Liam Martin after the visitors picked up the possession and on 19 minutes they doubled their advantage, Martin turning the ball home from near the penalty spot after Jackson’s run into the area. Chalmers crowded out Beesley after he had picked up Branson’s pass and Ashworth made a vital block on Beesley after a great run down the right wing by Lewis Knight.
Luke Pilling was then called on to make a low save after Jamie Spencer had picked up a loose ball in the area and after Ashton had won a corner Matt Regan’s return ball saw Liam Tomsett denied close in by a fine reaction save from Drench.
The hosts made a substitution at half time and moved ex-Robin Nicky Clee into a more central position and it was his clever cross which was headed out by Sam Sheridan before Tomsett’s back heel saw Jackson’s left foot attempt palmed away.
Jackson then made a great run from midfield but saw his cross beat everyone but with Ashton appearing comfortable entering the final ten minutes they suddenly conceded as Mark Lees failed to clear a long ball and Hurst’s square pass found Knight firing home from the edge of the area. Within a minute Bradford drew level as a corner was headed back by Beesley for Shane Killock to fire home and with the game entering added time Clee tricked his way past Matty Hill and provided the cross from which Killick fired the winner from 12 yards out.
