Ashton were out to avenge their heaviest defeat of the season in the reverse fixture but ultimately went down to a last gasp winner by the visitors. The first period saw few clear chances, the first two falling to home forward Johnson who sliced a left foot effort wide and then put a second opening just past the near post. Istead turned inside for the Bucks and hammered a shot over the top and was then fouled allowing Sandwith to flight a free kick into the area which Haggerty headed over the top.
With leading scorer Aaron Burns on the injured list it fell to Matty Barlow to lead the attack and it was his flick which put Johnson in the clear but he shot straight at Deakin. Matty Kosylo, who was deservedly chosen as Ashton’s man of the match, then turned inside but also shot straight at the keeper and the half ended with Maxfield collecting Phillips’ punch before volleying just off target.
Immediately after the break a fine long ball by Alex Frost saw Barlow put Matty Kosylo in on the right hand side but he sliced his effort wide of the near post whilst at the other end visiting centre forward Reed saw his header from a corner cleared from near the goal line. Full back Black then made a long run before seeing his shot deflected for a corner which was headed over by Roberts and straight afterwards the same player headed wide from a free kick. With the visitors dangerous in the air Reed then saw his header held underneath the bar by Phillips.
A goalmouth scramble in the home penalty area was eventually cleared before Istead had a long range attempt held. At the other end Scott Hogan made a good run from halfway, exchanged passes with Johnson before firing over the top and then Johnson put in a good cross from the left hand wing which Hogan miscued when it looked easier to score, the ball trickling harmlessly through to Deakin.
A mistake in the home defence then allowed Reed to fire in from 20 yards, the ball being deflected for a corner which the centre forward headed over the top. Just as Ashton’s second consecutive goalless home game looked increasingly likely the ball was given away and picked up by Istead who played in Black for a clear run into the area before crashing home the winning goal off the crossbar. As the visitors finished the stronger, Thornhill’s 20 yard effort swerved just wide of the home goal.
