Mariners Sunk By Robins

Report by David Robinson

Ashton got their league campaign back on track with a decisive home victory against Marine. With Jack Higgins debuting in defence it was he who headed Young's free kick narrowly wide before the opening goal arrived on 12 mins as a fine pass put Martin Pilkington clear and his cross saw Joe O’Neill’s first effort blocked before the centre forward swivelled and converted at the second attempt.
Visiting full back Latham hit a long range effort comfortably wide before the ball fell in the area to Jones whose attempt was blocked by Chris Lynch before an instant counter attack saw Coppin’s through ball lead to Pilkington firing well off target.
Ten minutes before the break Pilkington turned past a defender and fired a fantastic effort against the far post, the rebound falling to Coppin who curled his effort against the opposite post. United were not to be denied however and on the stroke of half time the rejuvenated O'Neill found space in the area and clipped a clever effort against the bar with strike partner Pilkington heading home the rebound.
After the break substitute Ordish flicked Rainford’s corner over the top before Coppin’s effort deflected for a corner and a high ball returned into the area found Gorton, featuring in a midfield role, volleying wide of the target. Pilkington added his second on the hour with a fine finish from a narrow angle off both the crossbar and the visiting keeper Williams after a run into the area. Gary Gee then won the ball and put sub Chadwick clear who side footed his effort well wide before Marine's most effective player, Fowler, played a square pass to Sumner who reduced the deficit before returning forward Rainford cut inside dragging his shot well wide.

A rebound from O’Neill then fell to substitute Chadwick who was denied by Williams’ right hand but the Robins had the final word as a free kick into the area found Chadwick turning to roll home the 4th and leave Ashton's league position looking somewhat healthier.

Team: Phillips, Coo (Richardson), Pearson, Higgins, Lynch, Gorton (Killeen), Gee, Young, O’Neill (Chadwick), Pilkington, Coppin. SNU: Rick, Halford.
