Robins Throw Away Yet More Points!
Report by David Robinson
Ashton continued their unfortunate trend of surrendering the lead as their near neighbours ran out deserved winners. Once again the visitors were first into their stride with only 9 minutes gone as Kayde Coppin continued his recent good form picking up Ashley Young’s square pass before checking past 2 defenders and firing his effort home off the left hand post.
Shortly afterwards a loose ball fell to O’Neill who forced O’Hara into a good tumbling save to his left before a free kick was headed on by Chris Lynch for O’Neill to clip the top of the crossbar with his own header. Ben Richardson’s run then allowed O’Neill’s cross to just evade Ashley Young as the Robins dominated the exchanges.
However there was still time for things to turnaround before the interval and the home side were duly level with their first attempt on target as Schofield won the ball in midfield and found winger Payne who cut inside and fired in a fierce left foot drive which was aided by a slight deflection. With 5 mins left in the first half Payne was again influential as his cross was only palmed out by Phillips to the waiting Oates who couldn’t miss from 6 yards. The dearth of resources currently available to Ashton was clearly indicated by the sight of Lee Rick warming up alone during the break.
For most of the second period Ashton demonstrated their ability to keep possession without being able to convert chances as Coppin’s fine left wing cross was glanced wide by Chadwick before a square pass by Lynch almost let in Payne before Phillips intervened. A fine move by the Robins then saw Coo play Matty Chadiwck in and he set up Joe O’Neill who caught his volley perfectly but was denied by a fine save from O’Hara.
A long ball from Lynch then saw Garry Gee’s volleyed cross pass just out of O’Neill’s reach before frustration grew as Ashton fell to the sucker punch of a short corner which eventually reached danger man Payne who sidestepped his way into the area and finished confidently and with the clock running down a free kick found substitute Mbalanda in acres of space to have the final word.
