Bloods Slaughtered At Butchers Arms
Report by David Robinson
Ashton began the New Year by slaughtering their local rivals at the Butcher’s Arms. In truth the home side could have taken a shock lead as a cross reached McLoughlin at the far post but Phillips palmed his effort away before German put a weak shot straight at the keeper.
Once Matty Chadwick had released Martin Pilkington to open the scoring on 11 minutes the floodgates opened and the home defence was breached at regular intervals. The bloods could have levelled as a quick break saw Brandao’s crossfield pass pick out Rouse who chipped the ball over Phillips but wide of the post. Midway through the half Pilkington returned the favour flicking the ball through to Chadwick who cut inside before providing a fine left foot finish.
Next a long cross by Coppin was dropped under pressure by home keeper Wimmer leaving Garry Gee with a tap in and within 4 minutes Coppin picked up a loose ball and curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner. A fine cross from Shawcross then saw McLoughlin completely miss his kick which rather summed up Droylsden’s fortunes as Matty Chadwick completed a first half hat trick with a superb effort into the top corner and another lethal finish on the stroke of half time.
There was an inevitable feeling of going through the motions after the interval although only 5 minutes had been played when Chadwick set up Pilkington with a one on one against Mortimer and he cut inside before hammering his effort into the top corner and Ashton’s leading scorer completed his own hat trick with a quarter of an hour to go as a mix up between Wimmer and Lattie allowed him to run the ball into an empty goal. The scoring was completed by sub Joe O’Neill who got in on the act with a late header from Lynch’s cross.
There was still time for Garry Gee to make a great run through the midfield before slicing narrowly wide. The result now takes Ashton into the play off positions with games in hand on several of the teams around them.
