Ashton Blown Away

Conditions Favoured The Brave Report by David Robinson

Ashton were unable to avenge their FA Cup defeat as the home side took the points with a last minute goal in Lincolnshire. Matty Kosylo was making his second debut for the Robins having had a spell at Vauxhall Motors but it was an afternoon he will wish to forget as he was sent off before half time for 2 bookable offences.
The visitors were already behind at this point as Paul Phillips was lucky not to be dismissed in the first 5 minutes for bringing down Robbins as the last man but escaped with a yellow card before the Daniels’ winger confidently converted the resulting penalty. Things could have got even worse for Ashton as Robbins again got clean through and in attempting to round Phillips provided a comedy moment by miskicking in front of an open goal. The conditions were dominating at this point with Ashton struggling against a howling wind with the ball spending plenty of time in the air and their best chance of an equaliser fell to Gorton who steadied himself but couldn’t keep his effort down. Just beforehand numbers were levelled up as Smith was somewhat mysteriously dismissed after catching Coppin.
Right at the start of the second period the Robins missed a golden chance to equalise as a nice touch by Coppin put Dale Johnson through on Jones and the Ashton striker squared the ball to the unmarked Pilkington who skied his effort over an open goal, presumably the victim of a bobble on the uneven playing surface. The home side were always dangerous on the break and almost extended their advantage as a clever chipped pass by Robbins saw Shariff’s effort beat Phillips but roll against the post with Lynch in hot pursuit.
With an equaliser looking increasingly unlikely it fell to substitute Lee Rick to fire home a fine free kick after O’Neill had been fouled but Ashton were unable to hold on to a point as Shariff got free down the right before firing straight at Phillips but then got the final touch as a long right wing cross was headed down by Carr. Ashton’s last chance to rescue something from the afternoon fell to captain Lynch who picked up a rebound in the area but just failed to keep his shot on target.
Team: Phillips, Lynch, Pearson, Gorton, Higgins, Young, Kosylo, Chalmers (Rick), Pilkington (Chadwick), Johnson, Coppin (O’Neill). SNU: Halford, Haslam
