Robins Grind Out Victory
Report by David Robinson
Ashton ground out an important victory on Merseyside thanks again to the intervention of Chris Baguley. The pitch at College Road was unusually worn in places putting passing at a premium and leading to a lot of long balls from the back. Aaron Chalmers almost got Ashton under way as his pass nearly found Martin Pilkington taking advantage of confusion in the home defence but the ball ran out for a goal kick.
Marine had their own opportunity when Jay Gorton’s misplaced back header left Andy Fowler to beat Phillips but also the near post. Dale Johnson then found space 20 yards out and tested Lake with a low drive as the visitors looked comfortably in control. The home side then hit back as Fowler brought a decent save from Phillips from a right wing cross and Goulding almost latched on to a 1-2 with Parle but Jay Gorton was alert.
The game resumed after the break with a series of misplace passes and overhit crosses as both sides struggled to find much rhythm and Greg Pearson’s cross to the far post just eluded Matty Kosylo before a throw in fell to the same player whose effort was deflected wide. Marine almost broke the deadlock through their most effective forward Andy Fowler as a long corner reached him at the far post and he was denied by a point blank save from Phillips before immediately afterwards Devine just failed to lift his lob high enough allowing the Ashton custodian to get a hand to the ball.
With a stalemate looking increasingly likely substitute Chris Baguley made the difference as a clearance from the home defence was blocked resulting in the ball falling to the Ashton midfielder who fired home a swerving effort from 20 yards. Goudling’s low effort needed to be saved at the foot of the post as the home side searched for the equaliser and Jones swerving effort was then knocked away by Phillips. As the clock ticked down Dale Johnson set up Baguley who cut inside before seeing his effort blocked and Johnson himself could have made things safe as he ran clean through but was denied by a good save from Lake.
