Robins Coast into Next Round

Report by David Robinson

Ashton United moved into the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup with Budweiser with a fine victory over the Evostik Premier league leaders in front of FA chairman Greg Dyke. The tie was settled as early as the 2nd minute as Kayde Coppin flicked the ball forward from midfield to send Martin Pilkington running into the area to provide a fine finish in off the post.
The nearest the hosts came to drawing level in the first half was when Hinchliffe’s clearance went all the way through to Lloyd who was denied at his near post by Phillips. Coppin then made a good run to the byline but Pilkington was unable to reach his cross and Lloyd then curled a free kick just past the far post. Midway through the half Lee Rick’s free kick was hooked goalwards by Pilkington but held by Hinchliffe and Ashton were able to reach the interval fairly untroubled against a surprisingly subdued Fylde.
The introduction of Blinkhorn increased the momentum for the hosts and after Denson’s cross was headed over by centre back Russell he put over another cross which saw Blinkhorn’s flick held by Phillips. The sub’s header down was then laid off by Rainford to Lloyd who beat Phillips but also the far post and he then reached the byline but saw his cross finger tipped to safety by the Ashton keeper.
A rare attack by the Robins then saw Coppin reach the byline before his cross evaded everyone and he then played a 1-2 with O’Neill before firing well over. Another exchange at the other end then put Lloyd clear but he completely overhit his cross before Ashton set themselves up for an uncomfortable last ten minutes as Jay Gorton was sent off following a clash with Blinkhorn.
Another cross from Denson was headed wide by Russell before Lloyd fired in an effort which was saved at the near post. Entering injury time and the home crowd thought they had a lifeline as Russell’s knockdown was flicked home by Rainford only for the linesman to raise the offside flag leaving Ashton safely in Monday’s draw.

Team; Phillips, Coo, Pearson, Gorton, Lynch, Gee, Denham (Logan), Young, Pilkington (O'Neill), Coppin, Rick (Burke). SNU: Halford, Abadaki, Freakes, Andrews.
